The use of 3D printing to create architectural demonstration models is growing. Compared to flat graphics, people still prefer analyzing a physical object because it is easier to conceptualize its impact. With 3D printed models, people can easily visualize space, determine the accuracy of dimension and the impact to their surroundings. That's why Downtown Jackson, Inc. chose RedEye ARC to build a cityscape for their citizens, investors and government officials. Downtown Jackson is a 13 year old non-profit organization providing positive change both aesthetically and economically in downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Their mission is to offer residents a safe, clean, bustling city they can be proud of. And today, they deliver that mission because crime rates have never been lower, occupancy rates have never been higher, and over $2 billion dollars in economic development projects are planned or underway in the heart of the city. Their 3D printed model will also serve to communicate economic development projects to investors and government officials. The 1:1020 scale cityscape is 48 inches in diameter and encompasses 66 blocks of the core downtown area including: 40% of the metro area's office market, most of the area's government facilities and a wealth of cultural amenities.
The model produced for Downtown Jackson was 3D printed with layers of PolyJet™ (photopolymer resin), just one of 15 common material choices for architects worldwide. PolyJet works well for models that require high feature detail and a smooth surface finish. Ideas produced with this unique material can absorb paint or dye and be chrome plated. Other architectural models produced by RedEye ARC have included color matched exterior details like: stone, shingle and tile.
